The latest word around the ZPD headquarters was that Officer Woods must have been in some sort of trouble. Why else would Chief Bogo have assigned him to a patrol run with Officer Wilde? The fox had, of course, long since been accepted as one of the police department's own; he did his job as well as anyone, and even made for fun company around the station. But there was a difference between having the former hustler around in general, and being confined to a squad car with him for an entire shift.
Of course, that dubious pleasure was normally uniquely enjoyed by Officer Hopps. But while she was out on her extended vacation (one she had more than earned after turning the city on its head, then promptly setting things right), the fox was being bounced around from assignment to assignment, partner to partner. It wasn't all bad for Nick, who appreciated the variety of the arrangement even while he missed Judy. (Wait, had he thought that out loud?) For certain other members of the ZPD, it was rather less agreeable.
As Officer Harrison could readily attest.
Of course, the snow leopard had only had to endure a tour of the station with Nick, and he'd had his own son there to distract him. As the various officers gossiping around HQ reasoned, Officer Woods was stuck in a car with the fox. If he didn't have a good sense of humor about the ordeal, the deer was almost certain to go mad. For his own part, Nick felt vaguely insulted by the gossip. Sure, his reputation for sarcasm and the odd bit of schadenfreude was well-earned, but was his company really so unpleasant?
Of course not. As he waited in the patrol car for his temporary partner to show up, Nick glanced at the extra coffee he'd been so considerate to grab for Hunter. Lightly drumming his paw on the steering wheel, he hummed snatches of a song to himself and glanced around, waiting to catch a sight of the deer officer. If Woods didn't run away screaming by the end of their shift, well, that would just show the rest of the ZPD that Officer Wilde wasn't just that annoying fox who'd happened to help save the city that one time.
