Lost in a vivid dream, a small wolf pup sat at the edge of a cliff. Everything was colored brightly; the grass was a shade of hot pink, the sky was green, and there were streaks of random, faded rainbows all over the place. It was giving the area a weird, glitchy feeling. Peony was silent as she stood up and stared out at the sea in front of her.
"Peony." A faint voice called. Ears now shot forward, the small Tibetan wolf pup turned around. Her face lit up as the image of her dad came into view.
"Daddy!" She called, running up to her father and hugging him tightly, her tail wagging. He chuckled and returned the hug, then proceeding to pick her up.
"How's daddy's girl?" He asked, lifting her up to the sky. All she was doing was giggling. "What? What's so funny?" He asked, laughing at the end of his comment.
"You know what's funny, dad! Your hair!" She giggled, putting her paw over the top of his head. Flowers and tiny rocks were tangled in his fur as she began to grab some of them out of his fur... When she was suddenly teleported to another place. Falling from the position her father had held her in the sky, and landed on the ground with a thud deep inside a sea of animals.
"Dad!?" She called, looking around quickly, jumping up. "Daddy? Where are you?"
Peony began to run through the crowd, her heart racing. Where'd he go? Why wasn't he here anymore? The child looked down as she ran when she began to felt crumbling beneath her paws. The ground was edging away and floating off in random directions! Looking back up, Peony felt a shiver of hope as she began to jump from piece of land to land. Almost there.. so close...
Then, as she was one jump away from him, Peony's father turned around and stared her deep in her eyes. That would've been okay if it weren't for the fact that his eyes were white and glowing as she looked into them. The pup could only watch as she fell into a dark pit. Darker..
Darker...
Darker....
Peony jolted awake. She quickly looked around, her heart racing and her breathing rapid. She was safe at home. Sighing and falling back onto her pillow, the troubled child turned onto her left side. The big bed she and her father shared was unusually cold. Turning over to her dad's side of the bed she let her muzzle fall into a scowl as she realized he was gone.
Work? Already? She asked herself, sitting up in bed and squinting her eyes to look at the calendar. Nope. He shouldn't be working today unless he was doing an extra job for more money. It was Tuesday. Peony glanced to the window door that led to the balcony. It looked about 6 A.M.-ish. Jumping out of bed, the pup went and got ready, and trudged her way down the stairs. Still tired from her weird dream, Peony yawned and stopped walking at the edge of the staircase.
No way... NO WAY! She thought happily, as she began to run to the kitchen side of the small room. "You're making breakfast!" She chirped eagerly to her father, running up beside him and looking at the pancakes on the griddle. "My favorite!"
A laugh erupted from her father. "And who said these were for you?"
Peony froze and glared up at her father. "You can't eat all six of those pancakes, or else you'll get fat!" She said, staring up at her with narrowed eyes.
"Well, I could be giving it to the neighbors. And hey, what's wrong with being fat?"
"Nothing! You just can't get that way, or else we won't be able to have our races!"
The rest of the day went by smoothly. Breakfast was amazing. The right amount of syrup on top of pancakes with a goodbye hug and kiss on the head before she went to school always made Peony's day go by better. Even when the other kids at school teased her.
The ride home from school was eerily quiet, though. It was just her and an elderly alpaca today, it seemed. Every rail the train went over was echoing throughout the small room. The darkness on the outside slightly frightened her as she curled her tail around her legs.
"Dad! I'm home!" She called once, walking through the door of their shabby home. No response. Rolling her eyes, she went to check the fridge. Home alone... Today of all days. It definitely didn't help her spooked condition.
Empty fridge. Peony pulled out a sticky note and wrote a quick list of things for him to buy from the store, as she grabbed some money and made her way down to Buggy Burger. After eating, brushing her teeth, doing homework, bathing and going to bed.
Yet.. She wasn't asleep yet.
Still awake and alert, the wolf pup felt herself jump up in bed as she heard the door open. Dad! But he wasn't alone.
"Listen - Adrian, was it? - I can't. I'm sorry." He said to someone, presumably Adrian. In order to listen better, Peony made her way halfway down the stairs to listen. There stood her father, and a pig dressed in a long sleeved ripped t-shirt and jeans. She seemed annoyed.
"No, you listen, Fang. You will hand over the goods. I know you have them. I've spent over five months tracking you down. Hand over the Betel Nut. I know you have it, you good for nothing florist." A cold sounding voice rang out.
"I don't have any! And even if I did, I wouldn't give it to you! You would use it for bad, and then say my name when the police catch you! Now out my house!" His voice was beginning to rise as he shoved her out of the house, locking the door. Knowing that wouldn't do much to keep the pig away, he began to dial 9-1-1.
Peony's ears fell forwards as she heard a car door open. Fear was beginning to set in as she heard footsteps.
"Open up Fang~!" The voice of the pig called from the other side. Fang continued to talk to the police through the phone, ignoring her calls.
"I said, OPEN UP!" She called, jumping through one of the windows. She landed perfectly, aiming a pistol at him. Peony gasped, frozen in fear. That was her dad! Her dad! Fang looked back at the staircase when he heard the gasp, sand that was when Peony saw a side of him that she'd never seen before.
Fang dropped the phone and leaped at the pig as she shot at him. "PEONY, RU-" He was cut off as he fell to the ground. Peony was frozen as she stared down at the body, then back at the pig. They locked eyes, right before she scrambled up the stairs. Breathing quickly, she ran out the door to the balcony and climbed her way to the roof. She heard the pig behind her. Doing her best to stay silent as she was mentally breaking down, the numb child jumped off of the roof and onto the neighbors. She slipped as she heard the pig yell.
But everything was a blur now, and the small pup could only hear the ringing in her ears. Even when she fell arm first onto the concrete, she popped back up and continued to run. And she didn't stop. Not until she made it almost out of the city, where she collapsed.
Alone. Loneliness and numbness was all she could feel. Crying due to the pain she could now feel, the pup sobbed herself to sleep.
Two whole days passed while she was there, sitting numbly and idly in the alley. She was hungry. And cold. And hurt, and the worst ways possible.
